How to use the melody generator

  1. Pick a genre or mood, a key and minor or major. You get a chord progression to write over, or bring your own from the chord progression generator.
  2. Set the note density for a sparse or busy melody and the melody range for how far it moves up and down.
  3. Press Play. Use New melody until you hear one you like, and switch between both parts, the melody or the chords on their own.
  4. Download the melody, the chords or both in one file.

How to drag the MIDI into FL Studio or Ableton

  • FL Studio: drag the .mid file onto the Playlist or onto an instrument in the Channel Rack. The combined file opens the melody and chords on separate channels. For trap slides, press the Porta button on the melody channel.
  • Ableton Live: drag the melody or chords file onto a MIDI track. Drop the combined file into an empty part of the Arrangement view and Live makes a track for each part. Turn on Glide in the synth to hear the slides.
  • Any other DAW: drag it onto a software instrument track, or use File, then Import.

Bells, plucks, flutes and pianos all suit these melodies. Try the melody an octave up for a lead and an octave down for a counter line.

How the melody is written

The rhythm comes first. Each genre has its own set of rhythms: trap and drill leave space and use triplets and slides, R&B and lo-fi use smooth, connected notes, and pop and uplifting fill the bar with eighths. The bars repeat in a call and response pattern, so the melody has a hook you can recognise instead of random notes.

Then the notes. Notes that fall on strong beats are taken from the chord underneath, which is what makes a melody sound like it belongs to the chords. Notes in between mostly move by small steps along the scale, and the last note of each phrase lands on a chord tone, the key’s home note when it can. Everything stays in the scale you picked.

FAQ

Is the melody generator free?

Yes. It’s free with no sign-up and no limit. Everything runs in your browser, so you can make, play and download as many melodies as you like.

Can I use the melodies in beats I sell?

Yes. The MIDI you download is yours to use in beats and songs you sell, lease or release, royalty free and with no credit needed.

Will the melody always be in key?

Yes. Every note comes from the scale you pick. The only exception is a borrowed chord, like the major V in a minor key, where the melody may use that chord’s own note so it doesn’t clash. Borrowed chords are labelled.

How do I get the melody into FL Studio or Ableton?

Download the .mid file and drag it onto a Channel Rack instrument or the Playlist in FL Studio, or onto a MIDI track in Ableton Live. The melody and the chords come as separate tracks in the combined file, so each can have its own sound.

How do the slides work?

In trap and drill some notes slide into the next one. In the MIDI file a slide note overlaps the note before it a little. Turn on portamento or legato glide in your synth (in FL Studio, the Porta button on the channel) and those overlaps play as slides.

Is this an AI melody generator?

No. It follows music theory rules: chord tones on the strong beats, mostly small steps in between, rhythms that fit the genre and phrases that end on a home note. Nothing is sent to a server.
